Should We Support the Church or the State?

Love your enemy. …Turn the other cheek… walk an extra mile...”

Was Jesus offering advice for contemporary foreign policy? It would take a very brave man to put his (His) teachings  into foreign policy, though Jimmy Carter did a pretty good job.

The New York Times (whose subscriber list has been, of late, not falling but   steadily growing )  recently reported on a  growing resistance among church leaders:

A broad array of clergy members has strongly denounced Mr. Trump’s order [on immigration]  as discriminatory, misguided and inhumane. Outrage has also come from some of the evangelical, Roman Catholic and mainline Protestant leaders who represent the churches most active in trying to aid persecuted Christians.

Regardless of whether they are separated or not, we do have to ask ourselves which will come first in our lives: church or state? Or. more specifically, when they are at odds, which will we support: the teachings of Jesus, or the policies of the state?

“Who are my brothers and sisters?,” Jesus asked. And then answered his own question: “Those who follow my teachings. “He made the choice,   at least f0r those who profess to be Christians,  pretty simple.
