Spiritual Artistry: Seth Godin Talks to Tami Sidon of Sounds True

Listened to this wonderful webcast last night featuring the ubiquitous Seth Godin and the heroic Tami Sidon, founder of Sounds True. Tami has been a hero of mine ever since I heard her interview Eckhart Tolle on the morning of 9/11. (You can find this interview at Even the Sun Will Die.) But also because she does amazing work bringing all the wise guys and wise ladies to our listening ear, year after year.

I confess to having grown a little tired of the well-intentioned Mr. Godin, just because he seems to be always and everywhere out ahead of the pack, always looking back over his shoulder telling us we, too can be always and everywhere out ahead of the pack. He does it with humor, insight and great intensity, but too often, for me, his urgency feels un-peaceful, unsettled, un-sustainable. As if being out ahead of the pack is the key to a happy life. That said, he’s been sustaining his happy lead for many decades. He qualifies as a semi-hero.

What I most liked about this webcast was Ms. Sidon’s very insightful questions about the spiritual nature of artful expression and the challenges of making a living in the world, and Seth’s deep honesty about these challenges and his insightful, very-upbeat answers about the pressing need for more courage among artists of the world. I was also happily amused to hear he has of late been taken by our old friend, Pema Chodron.

Obviously, managing this website entitled The New Methodist Church and Art Studio, their discussion about the need for “spiritual artistry” resonated deeply.

I encourage checking it out. (Again, you can listen here.) Although I already have at least a handful of Godin’s earlier books, their talk inspired me to buy Godin’s new book, The Icarious Deception: How High Will You Fly?” Will give a review, if appropriate, when and if I finish it. (Reading, after all, is one of the New Methods of the New Methodist Church.)

If you listen, I’d be interested in hearing what you think.
